The biggest Austrian wood processor is funding illegal logging in Romania. This is the conclusion of a two-year long investigation carried out by a US environmental agency. The incriminated corporation's wood factories take in more timber than contracted, for which Austrians pay extra. Any additional lumber they process is cut illegally. Sellers use forged invoices and the Austrian company turns a blind eye to it. Half of the wood processed in Romania comes from illegal deforestation. Every day, this country loses 25 thousand cubic meters of illegally logged timber. In the past ten years alone, Romania has lost 280 thousand hectares of virgin forest following extensive deforestation.
