Romanian leaders offer to help settle the crisis in Syria. Before leaving for today's European Council summit, President Klaus Iohannis recalled that Romania is one of the few states whose embassies in Damascus still have diplomatic personnel. Therefore, Bucharest can facilitate any negotiation with the Syrian authorities. Negotiation, Iohannis pointed out, is the only possible solution to the Syrian conflict and to stemming the wave of migrants who have put so much pressure on Europe. More than seven hundred thousand illegal immigrants have sought sanctuary in the EU this year during the worst refugee crisis since World War Two.
